This page is going to cover every aspect of Wood
Elf tactics I have come across and used. I may repeat
myself a bit from the troop analysis but that's
bad luck. If this tactics section isn't detailed enough tell me what
you want after all an e-mail is only a foot step
away, den den den Neighbours..........
Tactics vs Bretonnia
Wood Elves can do very well against Bretonnians,
just today I had a 17-4 victory.
The general strategy I use against Bretonnians
is to pick their units off one at a time and avoid their big units of
knights until the last turn when I will charge
them with everything I've got.
The first thing to do against Bretonnians
is to shoot their bowmen so you don't have to worry about your own
Archers. If they have a few units decide whether
you have enough Archers to make all of them take a panic test.
Be cautious though as you don't want to spread
you fire to much and have no one take a panic test. This is
about the only major threat to you from a Bretonnian
army the knights to be quite frank are quite seriously
useless against Wood Elves if you have the right
troops and some skill. Most Bretonnians use the lance
formation with their knights which means all
you have to do is get out of sight of the lead wanker, erm' knight and
they can't charge. This is easy to do with Wood
Elves because as we all know there's no one as manoeuvrable
as a Wood Elf army. If they don't use the lance
formation it may be a bit harder to get out of their charge arc. But
even if they do charge your Dryads they won't
have the rank bonus to win with and they will find it tuff to win with
only there horses attacking, I am of course referring
to willow aspect, the mandatory aspect when being
charged by cavalry or if your charging a unit
of High Elf Spearmen or Pikemen. Oops doesn't look like you will
be getting those 20 attacks mr Pikemen, looks
like you will be getting 1 attack from that champion hehehe. If
your Wardancers get charged I think we all know
what will happen here, Shadows Coil followed next turn with
Whirling Blades and a supporting unit charging
in.
So the basic plan is make sure you have
at least 2 units of Dryads and 1 unit of Wardancers, preferably 2 and
plenty of archers. Take out the units one at
a time with preferably 2 units, as you want to make sure you take
them out. The knights are the only challenge
you will face in hand to hand combat when playing Bretonnians. I'm
sorry if this section on Bretonnians is sounding
a little arrogant but I have never lost to a Bretonnian player ever!
oh and by the way the King of Bretonnia is completely
and utterly useless, he may pose a bit of trouble for your
archers but if you shoot him first he won't be
able to charge them. Any troop type you have can defeat the king.
Except for maybe Glade Guard, a Treeman will
kill him with ease, Durthu, well he could win with his eyes
closed, the king and his flying rat will find
it quite difficult to wound him, once Durthu's sprites finished off the
King. I think that's all that need be said about
the kings talents. Morgiana Le Fay is also useless, just make sure
you keep Durthu out of her line of sight.
Tactics vs Empire
*Just a note on Empire Models they are
easily the best I've seen, although those new regiments look quite
crap.
The few times I've played Empire I've
romped it in, ( don't worry there will be armies coming up below that are
a challenge ) Empire, being humans are really
easy to defeat. Their war machines if they work pose no real
threat to your army because you don't have any
ranks and only three troop types that can't skirmish. You can get
good victory points by killing three crew members
of their war machines this can be achieved with
Warhawks/Eagles or Scouts/Waywatchers.
Their toughness 3 troops are very vulnerable
to archery and massed Wardancer attacks. Their knights are no
hassle if you use Dryads to fight them. Just
apply the tactic of taking one unit out at a time and avoiding any
tough looking units until you can make a combined
assault, or just shoot them to oblivion. I apologize for the
length of this particular section on Empire but
human armies are just really easy to defeat all you have to do is
apply a bit of common sense.

Tactics vs Chaos Warriors
Here is an army that is a bit of a challenge.
Chaos Warriors always pass their bloody leadership tests no
matter how much you win by! ( that's just what
happens to me all the time )
Chaos Warriors can be defeated by massed
archery attacks as they are slow and can be slowed further by
Scouts. The main threat are those wretched Chaos
Knights who when you finally kill them come back thanks to
Eternal Battle, an excellent gift for expensive
Chaos Warrior war bands.
If your opponent puts his general in the
unit of Knights you would be advised to just avoid them. If you play on
a
large table this can be accomplished, but on
a small table like I have to use at my friends house you have to
tackle them. The best way to beat these horrors
is at least kill one with archery ( I'm assuming your opponent will
have a unit of 5 ) as this is 3 attacks gone
and with the Chaos Knights usually having a banner of might this is
very handy. Wardancers won't be able to wound
them so only engage Chaos Knights if they are charging you
and you can hold up their charge with Shadows
Coil. If you want to deter Chaos Knights from coming from a
certain direction place a Treemen and some Wardancers
in the desired location as the Knights will avoid it like
the plague. Even though I hate getting expensive
magic items, besides the Bow of Loren. I would consider
purchasing a Gromril Blade for your general and
maybe some Armour of Fortune, ( it's a waste of money
getting the Armour of Protection for an extra
35 points ). This should wipe the smile off your opponents face
when you start massacring his Knights. Dryads
are the best troops for taking on his Knight's although it can be
risky taking the charge. The Chaos Knights have
two attacks so if you disable one you still have five horses at
weapon skill 4 and strength 4 and 5 attacks from
the Knights at weapon skill 6 and strength 6 which if your
unlucky can kill a couple of Dryads.
When playing Chaos Warriors it's one of
the rare times I get a Battle Standard Bearer as sometimes you just
can't avoid prolonged combat with Chaos
Warriors as they are so hard to kill.
As always have at least two units supporting
each other when you are in combat and of course Scouts and the
such annoying your opponent and stopping march
moves.
Chaos Warriors on foot go down like a
sack of shit to archery as they only get a 4+ save with the -1 modifier
which means if you get 16 wounds from a round
of fire about 8 will go down a very large chunk of points dead.
Chaos Warriors are an army that Wardancers
don't fare to well against when it comes down to killing
opponents though all their usual benefits are
still there. Shadows of Death Wardancers are good against Chaos
Warriors as there -1 modifier can help some what.
Warhawks are not very good vs Chaos Warriors
as well all they do is bring down the combat resolution for
everyone, after playing a few games you'll know
what I mean.
If you play on a large table and your
just playing to win a massive archery force is the way to go but if your
opponent gets all shitty when you don't ever
get into hand to hand combat then lots of Dryads is the way to go
and not to many light troops as all these do
is stuff your combat resolution.
